Palm tree removal
We remove palms of every size, from backyard cocos palms to mature Canary Island date palms, and grind the stump. Cocos (queen) palms are listed as exempt or undesirable in many Sydney councils, so they can often be removed without a permit, but check your council's list first. Big palms are taken down in sections or lifted out by crane.

Palms are not like other trees
A palm has no branches, and its trunk doesn’t thicken like a eucalypt’s. That changes how it comes down. The dead and green fronds come off first, then the trunk is cut from the top in short sections and lowered, or rigged to a crane and lifted out in one or two pieces when there’s no room to lower it. The fibrous stump grinds out cleanly.
Palms and council rules
Southern Sydney’s councils treat palms very differently. Many list the cocos palm as an exempt or undesirable species you can remove without a permit. Some protect all palms over a certain height. Others mention palms only in their heritage rules. Check your council’s page before you book, or ask us when we quote.

Questions
Palm removal: common questions.
Do I need council approval to remove a cocos palm?
In many Sydney councils the cocos palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) is on the exempt or undesirable species list, so no permit is needed. It's not exempt everywhere, and heritage properties usually have stricter rules, so check your council's page.
Why are cocos palms considered a problem?
They drop large amounts of fruit that attracts flying foxes and rats, the fronds are heavy when they fall, and the seeds spread into bushland. That's why many councils list them as weeds.
Canary Island date palms are big and spiky. Can you still remove them?
Yes. We have removed large Canary Island date palms in the Shire, and one customer's review says we did it in terrible weather. The fronds are cut off first, then the trunk is taken down in sections or lifted by crane.
Can a palm be transplanted instead?
Sometimes. Some palms move well because their roots are compact, but it needs a crane and a transplant specialist. Ask us and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth it.
