Which trees can you remove without a permit?

Most councils publish a list of exempt species: weeds and problem trees you can usually remove without approval, whatever their size. The lists differ a lot. Cocos palm is exempt in 31 of 32 councils, camphor laurel in 25. This table matches every council's own list against the species people ask us about most.

  • ✓ On the council's exempt list
  • ✓* Exempt with conditions (size, distance or location): hover or tap for the wording
  • – Not on the list: the tree needs approval if it's over the council's size threshold
Before you rely on this: exempt lists almost never apply on heritage items or in heritage conservation areas, and some councils also require notice, an arborist's species identification or a replacement tree even for exempt species. Each council's page has its full list and conditions. Some councils have no exempt list at all.
